The SD20 fork cartridges are a Separate Damping System. This means all the rebound damping is in the right leg and all the compression damping in the left leg. The main advantage of this is improved oil flow. Oil can flow faster around the damping system, as there are less orifices to flow through. This gives much better damping response when the action of the fork is changing from rebound to compression, or vice versa.

Another advantage of separating the damping between the legs, is the adjustment is very quick and easy to access. Normally if you have damping adjusters on top of the forks they are both rebound damping adjusters. The compression damping would be situated at the bottom of the fork, and is normally not adjustable. Because the SD20 cartridge separates the damping between the legs, it has a rebound damping adjuster on the top of the right leg and a compression damping adjuster on top of the left leg. Both damping adjusters click to make the adjustment more accurate and easy to understand. If you are not used to adjusting suspension, this gives you more confidence to adjust the forks. The rebound and compression damping adjustment has a range 20 clicks.

The damper rods on the SD20 cartridges are hard chromed and polished for a hard smooth finish. This improves the low speed action of the cartridge, improving the mid corner feel and making the front forks more compliant.

The SD20 fork cartridges have springs in both legs. The springs are manufactured to our design from Silicone Chrome. The spring rate is chosen to suit the weight of the bike and also your rider weight.

Because the SD20 cartridges have been designed for smaller diameter forks, it is normally not possible to add preload adjustment to the fork tops. Instead we have come up with an internal adjustable preload system. To access this you simply undo the chrome tube to expose the top of the spring. On top of the spring is a knurled wheel that screws up and down a thread. To adjust the preload you simply undo a lock nut and wind the knurled wheel up or down. This new preload adjustment system means you do not have to remove the fork top to adjust the preload.

We supply the SD20 cartridges with two different types of fork top. One fork top has ‘hidden’ damping adjusters, the other fork top has ‘visible’ damping adjusters.

SD20 CARTRIDGES WITH HIDDEN DAMPING ADJUSTMENT DESIGNED FOR CLASSIC RACING - F1 TOPS

The SD20 fork cartridges have been designed for two reasons. One is to upgrade forks with very little or no adjustment. The second reason for having the SD20 cartridges is to replace your original old damping system with more modern new damping system. We have been fitting modern fork cartridges to older/classic forks from the 1960’s, 1970’s and 1980’S for over 25 years. We had previously been fitting our GP20 fork cartridges to the classic forks with great success. But the feedback we had from our customers is that they would like more adjustment in the cartridges and also make the adjustment easier to access. This is why we developed the SD20 fork cartridge. We have been manufacturing a larger version of the SD20 cartridge for modern bikes for nearly 10 years. So we already had the understanding of what was needed to make a smaller version, more suited for lighter classic bikes.

In classic racing it is normally not allowed to have external adjustment on your forks. For this reason we make a special SD20 cartridge with hidden damping adjustment. The damping adjustment is hidden underneath an M6 Tapered Allen Screw. To access the damping adjustment you simply undo and remove the screw, then use a 3mm Allen key to change the damping. We have been using this type of fork top on Maxton fork cartridges for over 20 years, nobody has ever been disqualified for using these tops.

SD20 FORK CARTRIDGES WITH VISIBLE DAMPING ADJUSTMENT FOR USE ON ROAD BIKES - F2 TOPS

The F2 fork tops are basically the same as the F1 fork tops, but instead of the damping adjusters being hidden, the damping adjusters are visible. We would recommend this design fork top for road bikes.
